Automatic Transmission Fluid with Dexron III

Dexron III is the GM specification that was prescribed for many years in torque converter automatics on cars and commercial vehicles, and it still appears in countless service schedules today. An ATF is chosen by this approval, not by viscosity.

What Dexron III lays down

The specification does not primarily describe lubrication performance, but the friction behaviour of the fluid over temperature and service life. That is exactly what determines how a torque converter automatic shifts: the clutch packs are applied hydraulically, and the coefficient of friction decides whether the change is smooth, harsh or slipping.

On top of that come requirements for oxidation stability, foaming behaviour and compatibility with the transmission's seals. Two fluids of the same viscosity but with different approvals behave noticeably differently in the same transmission.

Dexron III and Dexron VI

Dexron VI is the newer generation: thinner, more stable against ageing and developed for the transmissions GM built afterwards. It is not automatically usable backwards - some transmissions tolerate it, others shift differently with it, because the viscosity is not what the hydraulics were designed around.

If your service schedule calls for Dexron III, Dexron III is the right answer. If it says Dexron VI, the same applies the other way round.

Multi-vehicle ATF

Many products cover a list of approvals at once, often including Dexron III alongside ZF TE-ML and MB 236 numbers. Such fluids are right if and only if your specific approval appears on the list on the container. The general claim "suitable for many automatic transmissions" is no substitute for the number.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Dexron VI instead of Dexron III?

Not without a release from the vehicle manufacturer. Dexron VI is thinner and developed for newer transmissions; in an automatic designed around Dexron III the shift behaviour can differ. If the service schedule calls for Dexron III, stay with it.

Is draining the ATF enough?

When you drain it, a large part of the fill stays in the torque converter and in the lines. A complete change is done as a flush and needs correspondingly more fluid. A partial change is better than none, but it does not replace the flush.

How do I recognise worn ATF?

By colour and smell: fresh ATF is clear and reddish, aged fluid turns dark brown and smells burnt. If delayed or jerky shifts come on top, the change is overdue - regardless of mileage.
