Buy 0W-20 engine oil

0W-20 is the grade for hybrids, stop-start engines and modern direct-injection petrol engines - above all at Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Hyundai and Kia. It is deliberately thin, to cut friction and fuel consumption, and that is exactly why it belongs only in engines the manufacturer specifies it for. Check that in the oil finder before you buy.

Why hybrids and stop-start engines need thin oil

A hybrid restarts its combustion engine constantly and often runs it for only a few minutes at a time. It therefore spends an unusually large share of its running time cold - and cold is precisely the state in which a thick oil causes wear, because it reaches the bearings too slowly.

0W means the oil stays pumpable well below freezing and is where it is needed immediately after the start. The 20 after it keeps internal friction low in a warm engine, which the manufacturer factors into its fuel consumption and CO2 figures.

The same design philosophy shows up in modern naturally aspirated engines and small turbocharged petrol engines built around a low HTHS viscosity: tighter bearing clearances, a different oil pump, finer galleries.

Where 0W-20 does not belong

In an engine that calls for an oil with a higher high-temperature viscosity - ACEA A3/B4, say, or an approval such as MB 229.5. There the oil film of a 0W-20 is too thin under load, and the engine was not designed for it. Typical cases: older European petrol and diesel engines, charged performance engines, anything specified on 5W-40 or 0W-40.

"Thinner is more modern" is therefore not an argument. The grade follows the design, not the year of manufacture.

Approvals that matter for 0W-20

  • API SP and ILSAC GF-6 - the current standard for petrol engines, with protection against pre-ignition (LSPI) on turbocharged direct-injection units
  • ACEA C5 - low HTHS viscosity and reduced ash content, for European vehicles with a particulate filter
  • manufacturer approvals from Japanese and Korean brands, which frequently refer straight to API and ILSAC

Many 0W-20 oils carry several of these at once. What counts is always the specification in your owner's manual.

Oil change and oil level on a hybrid

Two points that are regularly underestimated on hybrids. First, the oil here does not wear out by mileage but by running hours and cold starts - a hybrid with 15,000 km of city traffic has stressed its oil more than a diesel with 30,000 motorway kilometres. Stick to the time limit, not just the mileage limit.

Second, in short-journey use fuel gets into the oil and dilutes it. If the oil on the dipstick smells of petrol, or the level stands above the maximum mark, that is a reason to change it and not to wait: a diluted 0W-20 has lost exactly the load-carrying capacity it was designed for. The oil filter goes with it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use 0W-20 instead of 5W-30?

Only if the manufacturer approves both - that happens, but it is not the rule. If your vehicle calls for 5W-30, a 0W-20 lacks the intended oil film at operating temperature. The reverse applies too: a hybrid engine designed for 0W-20 does not run more economically on 5W-30, just more stiffly.

Is 0W-20 only for hybrids?

No. It is the specification for many modern petrol engines with no hybrid drive, above all at Japanese and Korean manufacturers, and for some European models with ACEA C5. The hybrid is simply the most common case, because that is where the cold-start advantages count most.

What is LSPI and why is it mentioned with 0W-20?

LSPI is uncontrolled pre-ignition at low engine speed and high load, which mainly affects turbocharged direct-injection petrol engines and can damage pistons. The oil category API SP expressly requires protection against it - and these are precisely the engines that often run 0W-20.

Does an engine use more oil on 0W-20?

Not one that is built for it - piston rings and bearing clearances are matched to it. In an older engine with wider clearances it does, and that is one of the reasons you do not change grade without an approval.
