Buy 0W-12 engine oil

0W-12 is among the thinnest engine oils there are and occurs practically only in Japanese hybrids and small engines for which the manufacturer specifies it by name. If you do not find this grade named explicitly in your owner's manual, it is not your grade.

A grade for very few engines

Below 0W-16 the choice narrows, and the specifications come almost only from the manufacturers themselves: ILSAC created a category for 0W-16 with GF-6B, but for 0W-12 and thinner oils there is no general class - they run on factory specifications.

That is the most important point about this grade: the approval comes from the handbook, not from an ACEA or API designation on the label.

Why "thinner is better" does not hold

A 0W-12 in an engine that calls for 0W-20 or 5W-30 builds a thinner lubricant film at operating temperature than intended. Under high load - motorway, trailer, mountain roads - that is exactly the range where the design matters. The consumption advantage of these grades arises in a driving profile the engine was developed alongside, and it does not transfer to other engines.

If you own such a vehicle

Two practical notes. First: the fill quantity is small, often under 4 litres, and the oil level reacts correspondingly sensitively to half a litre too much or too little - check it on level ground and as the manufacturer prescribes, on many hybrids via the on-board menu.

Second: buy a bottle to keep in reserve. This grade is on hardly any shelf, and not having the right product when you need it leads to exactly the stopgaps you want to avoid on an engine laid out this tightly.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an ACEA or API class for 0W-12?

None of its own. ILSAC GF-6B covers 0W-16; below that the manufacturers work with their own specifications. What counts is therefore solely the figure in your owner's manual.

Can I use 0W-16 or 0W-20 instead?

Only if the manufacturer permits several grades, which does happen. A thicker oil as a rule does the engine no harm, but it costs the consumption advantage; the manufacturer still has to approve it explicitly.

Is 0W-12 only for hybrids?

Predominantly, because that is where the cold-start advantages and the consumption effect are strongest. There are conventional small engines with this specification too, practically only on the Japanese market.
